Onyango John Odongo: Bank Of Uganda's First Manager Dies Aged 102

Onyango John Odongo, Bank of Uganda's first manager and one of the longest serving Acholi leaders who served the government with loyalty right away from the colonial time upto date, has died aged 102. He passed away on Sunday from Nsambiya Hospital in Kampala where was admitted for specialized treatments.

Onyango John Odongo who was the first five Bank of Uganda managers at the independent time was reported to have died after he collapsed and hit his head on the floor which left him unconscious and never walked up to talk again.

The deceased was born on 7/March/1919 and he was the first bank manager at Fort Portal as bank manager for Uganda credit and saving bank.

 In the 1950s, he served as a member of the Acholi district council during the colonial time representing people of Awere Sub County and later became one of the district Commissioners for Acholi District.

From 1979-1980, During the NULF transitional government, he was named the district Commissioner for Acholi District serving as the zonal organizer for the greater North under chairmanship of Galdino Okello after the fall of President Iddi Amani Dada.

In 1985 after the fall of Obote 11, he also served as the Army Pay Master for Gen. Tito Okello Lutwa UNLA government and later resigned due to continue killings and lootings by the NULA soldiers in Kampala and other parts of the country.

In the 1986s after the fall of Tito Okello Lutwa, he was again named the director of information at the National Resistance Army/ Movement NRA/M.

Onyango also left a great memories after he authored numerous books about his people of Acholi. He authored books like Why Uganda Independence Constitution Failed in 1993, Central Lwo During Aconya in 1976 part one, Central Lwo During Aconya in 1977 part two, Armed Conflict in Northern Uganda in 2000, The need for National Dialogue to Freedom Uganda in 2019 among others.

Meanwhile, at the time of his death, he was a strong advocate for federal system of governance as the best of governance for Uganda.
