A 25-year-old grandson of former Ugandan president Idi Amin has been disqualified in the third round of his Commonwealth Games boxing bout against England’s Damar.
Aziz "Ringo" Abdul, who was Uganda’s only hope in boxing at the Games, was left disappointed by the judges’ decision after receiving three warnings. He was disqualified for head butting his opponent Damar Thomas.
Abdul, whose grandfather’s achievements inspired him to pursue the sport, saw his Commonwealth Games gold medal dream shattered in the third round.
The boxer hails from Uganda’s West Nile region. Idi Amin, who was also a heavyweight boxer, held the Ugandan national heavyweight title for nine consecutive years between 1951 and 1960.
