Uganda’s super heavyweight boxer Aziz "Ringo" Abdul will fight England’s Damar Thomas tonight in Glasgow, Scotland, as he seeks to end Uganda’s 36-year Commonwealth Games boxing gold drought.
Ringo, the grandson of former Ugandan President Idi Amin, is representing Uganda at the 2026 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow.
The 25-year-old, who fights under the nickname “Ringo”, is confident he has the power to upset one of the favourites for the title and book his place in the medal rounds.
“I am very happy to be fighting the English fighter,” Abdul said. “I have waited for this moment for three years. But now we are not in Africa, we are in Europe. As my grandpa used to say, you need to win by knockout, so that’s what we have trained for and that’s what I hope to do.”
Uganda last won Commonwealth boxing gold in 1990 when Freddie Simba triumphed in Auckland.
