Renowned producer Elyas Powel has called on Northern Uganda’s music industry to raise its standards, saying the region’s music scene has "reached a standstill" and is waiting for the next genuine hit.
In an open message shared on Facebook with artists, producers, DJs, promoters and fans, Powel said he has been closely watching the industry since stepping away from music production.
According to Powel, even the new generation of artists who brought fresh energy are now struggling, with many asking why their music is "no longer moving". He noted that older artists are also finding it hard to produce songs that truly connect with people.
“Right now, the entire industry seems to be waiting for the next genuine hit,” he said.
Powel however said he holds no grudges against anyone. He described himself as someone who was never greedy and who spent his career sharing knowledge and helping producers grow.
“My wish has always been to see Northern Uganda music reach greater heights,” he added.
The producer who had stepped aside from doing any music production warned that pulling each other down, creating tension, or believing that someone is fighting or bewitching another artist will not help the industry.
“The fans are waiting for something real — music that is genuine, timeless, and speaks to people's hearts. That is what will bring back the excitement we once had,” Powel stated.
He said he understands the challenges behind the scenes and believes the solution lies in artists and producers improving their craft and approach to music.
As the season for airwave-dominating songs approaches, Powel made a bold promise to motivate artists.
“If any Northern Uganda artist releases a genuine hit song that captures the entire Northern sub-region the way the classic hits of the past did, I will personally sponsor the official music video with UGX 500,000,” he announced.
Powel stressed that the offer is not a competition. “This is my contribution to encourage excellence and inspire artists to create music that can stand the test of time,” he said.
