Kilak South MP Hon. Dr. Gilbert Olanya has used his government vehicle facilitation funds to buy a brand new 30-seater minibus for the people of Kilak South and the wider Acholi community.
The Member of Parliament for Kilak South County in Amuru District said he chose not to purchase a personal luxury vehicle with the Shs 300 million allocated to legislators for their new term.
“Having one vehicle is enough for me. Even if I buy more than one car, I can only drive one at a time,” he said.
Instead, Dr. Olanya procured a minibus worth Shs 260 million to help address transport challenges affecting his constituents.
According to the MP, the bus will be used to support community groups, students, and residents across Kilak South and Acholi at large who struggle with transport costs.
The decision has been praised by several constituents who say it prioritizes service delivery over personal comfort.
Earlier this year, the government of Uganda allocated UGX 315 million (approximately $88,000) to each of the 529 members of the 11th Parliament to purchase personal vehicles.`
`This totals a cumulative public expenditure of UGX 166.635 billion (around $45 million) in the 2026/2027 financial year. However, the allocation sparked intense public debate and criticism.
