Uganda's stand up comedian Dr Hillary Okello has revealed that his decision to abandon a medical career for full-time stand-up comedy initially disappointed his parents, who feared that the entertainment industry could expose him to negative influences and unhealthy habits.

The comedian, who is also a qualified medical clinician, explained that his parents struggled to accept his career change, having expected him to continue practising medicine.

They were concerned about the possible lifestyle associated with his new profession and how it might affect his character. However, Okello’s determination to build a successful career in comedy eventually changed their perception.

Through his persistence and achievements, he has managed to earn their support and make them proud of his decision.

Despite his medical background and years of practice after graduation, Okello said his passion for comedy continued to grow.

He initially balanced his work in the hospital with performances on stage before deciding to dedicate himself entirely to entertainment when his comedy career began gaining momentum.

The comedian expressed gratitude for the progress he has made, noting that his decision to pursue comedy has opened doors to opportunities and experiences he might not otherwise have encountered.

Okello also encouraged parents to be more supportive of children who choose unconventional career paths, particularly in creative industries such as comedy, music and other forms of art.

He believes that talent can provide a sustainable source of income and employment, urging families not to dismiss artistic ambitions simply because they fall outside traditional professions.

Inspired by established comedians such as Salvador, Okello followed his passion and demonstrated that creative careers can offer meaningful opportunities for those willing to work hard and remain committed to their craft.
