Police in Amuru District are holding two NRM officials over allegations of embezzling money meant to facilitate the upcoming LC1 elections.
The suspects have been identified as Ojera Geoffrey, the NRM Secretary for Finance, and Oyet Martin, the Administrative Secretary. Efforts to arrest Baguma Wilfred, the NRM Chairperson for Amuru District, are still ongoing.
According to ASP Ongom David Mudong, the PRO of Aswa West, the arrests followed a tip-off from a whistleblower whose identity has been withheld for security reasons.
Police allege that on July 22, 2026, while at the NRM offices, the three officials distributed less money than was allocated to Women Council leaders in Amuru District.
During a search, officers recovered UGX 1,405,000 from the suspects, which has been exhibited as evidence. The process of recovering the remaining money is ongoing.
Preliminary findings indicate that the NRM Party released UGX 60,000,000 to Amuru NRM officials for the election exercise. Out of UGX 6,320,000 that was meant for Women Council leaders’ allowances and transport refund, the officials allegedly diverted UGX 2,970,000.
Police have urged residents to remain calm as investigations continue.
"We urge those affected by these alleged corruption tendencies to remain calm as detectives gather more information and evidence. Once investigations are concluded, those found culpable will be prosecuted under the law," ASP Mudong said.
