Celebrated musician and producer Labert Dickson says most musicians are not educated because the passion for music takes over and ends their schooling early.
Speaking in an interview with Luo Tunes, Labert explained that music is a God-given talent inherited from grandparents, but it often becomes a distraction for learners.
“The biggest problem we face as musicians in the music industry is that people inherit music and it is God-given from our grandparents,” he said. “But actually it affects people’s education, and most musicians are not educated.”
According to the singer, the desire to sing is so strong that students struggle to focus in class.
“For sure music affects people’s education because most of the time your heart will be pleading and demanding. Many people’s music has ended their education journey. You try all your level best to study but you cannot,” Labert noted.
He added that the challenge is worse in poor families, where the gift of singing often appears first.
“To make matters worse, singing gifts normally fall in poor families without money. You also feel that instead of my parents struggling looking for my school fees, you decide to also start singing in the name of looking for money,” he said.
Labert however observed that some artists later return to school after realizing the importance of education.
“Well, if you find the one who is educated, that means he just went back to study after realizing that education is very important,” he added.
He also said that in African society musicians are underlooked, unlike in European countries where musicians are treasured and respected.
