Police in Apac District have arrested a 22-year-old man for allegedly hacking his biological mother to death following a disagreement over water.
The suspect, identified as Gilbert Akaki, a peasant farmer, was arrested and is detained at Apac Central Police Station. He was found hiding near the scene in Arak Village, Akokoro Parish, Akokoro Sub-county.
The deceased was identified as Margaret Atino, 49. She was allegedly killed on the night of Tuesday, July 15, 2026.
According to North Kyoga Regional Police Spokesperson Patrick Jimmy Okema, preliminary investigations show that Akaki returned home from Aluga Trading Centre and found his parents, Engena Robert and the deceased, together with his sister, Alobo Sandra, asleep in their respective houses.
Okema said the suspect later went to his father’s house demanding water. His father reportedly told him it was not the right time and asked him to leave.
Police also said preliminary findings indicate that the suspect had previous encounters with the law and was allegedly a habitual consumer of alcohol and marijuana.
Investigators were further told that the suspect attacked his mother because she frequently abused him and allegedly chased away his wife. Investigations into the circumstances surrounding the incident are ongoing.
