The Ministry of Works and Transport says construction of a new Karuma Bridge along the Kampala-Gulu Highway will start in the next few months.
In a statement issued on Wednesday, the Ministry said preparations for the project are at an advanced stage.

The existing 63-year-old bridge was temporarily closed in 2025 after developing structural faults, before being reopened following emergency repairs.
Government later confirmed plans to build a completely new bridge to replace the aging structure.
According to the Ministry, the new bridge is expected to improve safety and boost trade across Northern Uganda and the wider East African region.
“The new bridge will enhance safety and support trade across Northern Uganda and the East African region,” the Ministry said.
Karuma Bridge sits on the key highway linking northern and southern Uganda. It is also a critical transit route for cargo moving between the ports of Mombasa and Dar es Salaam to South Sudan.
