UPC's Sarah Aguti declared winner of Dokolo by election

Ms Sarah Aguti of the Uganda People’s Congress (UPC) party has emerged winner of the Dokolo district by-election parliamentary seat after beating five of her contenders in the race to replace the deceased Woman Member of Parliament Cecilia Ogwal.

Dokolo District Woman Member of Parliament became vacant following the death of the Iron lady Cecilia Barbra Ogwal on January 18th 2024. She succumbed to cancer while receiving treatment in India aged 77.

Ms Aguti was Thursday night declared winner of the election by Dokolo District Returning Officer, Mr Erikwaine Ngobi after she polled 23044 votes in the total 173 polling stations scattered across the northern Uganda district to beat five other candidates in the race.

“As a Returning officer for Dokolo Electoral District and in accordance with Section 53 of the Parliamentary Elections Act, declare Aguti Sarah who has obtained the largest number of votes, the winner and District Representative to Parliament, Dokolo Electoral District,” Ngobi declared on Thursday evening.

Meanwhile, Aguti’s closest competitor, Ms Rose Adong Janet Elau of the ruling NRM party came second with 14001 votes, while the late Cecilia Ogwal’s daughter, Dr Rosemary Acwol Ogwal who carried opposition FDC’s flag came in third place with 8168 votes and NUP’s Harriet Ageno fourth with 727 votes.

Two independent candidates in the race, Ms Akullo Esther-Obot and Rebecca Arao had 790 and 439 votes respectively.
