Singer Obol Simpleman beats Gulu District LC5 incumbent Hon Opiyo Ateker in LC5 race

Northern Uganda legendary musician turned politician, Obol Justin Simpleman of Democratic Party (DP) has emerged victorious in Gulu District LC5 election.

Hon Obol Justin Simpleman's victory comes after his previous failed attempt in 2021, where he lost the seat to incumbent Opiyo Christopher Ateker.

According to the official results announced by Gulu District Returning Officer, Mr Kimbowa Erasmus, Obol garnered 9,988 votes, defeating incumbent Opiyo Christopher Ateker (NRM), who got 3,836 votes.

Other candidates like Lalam Lillian Stella (FDC) who received 2506 votes, Odong Geoffrey Ojibo (Indp) got 2143 votes and Okello Samuel (NUP) tailed with 141 votes. 

The total number of voters in Gulu District, as per electoral commission data 2026 are  19238 from 142 polling stations. 

The total number of valid votes was 18,614, while invalid votes were 582 and spoilt votes were 42. 

This shows a major setback for the National Resistance Movement (NRM) Party, as the Democratic Party (DP) gains ground in Gulu district.
