Retired Uganda People's Defence Forces (UPDF) Lieutenant General Peter Elwelu has been arrested by security forces from his hideout in Soroti City over alleged involvement in subversive activities and plans to destabilise the Teso sub-region.
The arrest was confirmed on Monday evening by Colonel Chris Magezi, the Acting Director of Defence Public Information at the Ministry of Defence and Veteran Affairs.
In a statement announcing the development, Col.
Magezi said Elwelu had been on the run as security agencies pursued investigations into alleged activities threatening security and stability in Teso.
"Renegade UPDF General Peter Elwelu has this evening been arrested by the security forces in Soroti City," Magezi announced.
He further stated that security forces had recently recovered 15 firearms, military fatigues and two pickup trucks allegedly linked to the retired general. Magezi added that Elwelu would be charged and prosecuted in accordance with the law.
The arrest follows heightened security operations in the Teso sub-region amid allegations that the former senior military officer was involved in activities aimed at destabilising the government.
Elwelu previously served as Deputy Chief of Defence Forces and Commander of the UPDF Land Forces before retiring from active military service and taking up presidential advisory responsibilities.
His arrest marks a significant development in an unfolding security investigation that has attracted national attention.
Security authorities are expected to provide further details regarding the investigations and the charges Elwelu may face as the legal process progresses.
