In a dramatic and tightly contested race, Tek Kwo Wilfred, a former Mega Fm news anchor and known content creator has been officially declared the Publicity Secretary of the NRM Youth League in Amuru District.
The election, held at Otwee Public Primary School playground, drew widespread attention and ended in a landslide victory after a tense standoff and a re-run vote.
Tek Kwo Wilfred, who hails from a strong media background, secured 35 votes, narrowly beating Opiyo Christopher from Amuru Town Council, who garnered 30 votes. Ochola Thomas from Pogo Sub-county, who had initially shown interest in contesting for Youth Chairman but later stepped down to support Opiyo, failed to garner any support during the voting exercise.
The atmosphere turned volatile when supporters of Opiyo Christopher refused to be counted, citing low turnout on their side and attempted to bribe and sway others, prompting electoral officials to call off the first vote. However, the situation was later brought under control and the election was re-conducted, leading to a decisive win for Tek Kwo Wilfred.
“I thank the youth of Amuru for trusting and believing in my capability of mobilizing for the NRM party,” Wilfred said in an exclusive interview with Luo Tune, moments after his victory. “I call upon every NRM youth to cooperate with the new executive so that NRM wins the general elections. From top to grassroots, we shall paint every leadership office yellow. I am happy and ready to serve with peace, unity, and to set records in Amuru — a place where the opposition, especially FDC, bragged it belonged to them. We will prove them wrong through serious mobilisation.”
Wilfred’s victory not only secures him a strategic role in the district’s youth wing but also places him among the top NRM youth executive members in Amuru District, strengthening his political foothold.
A Media Powerhouse Turned Politician
Tek Kwo Wilfred's journey to political prominence is rooted in his illustrious media career. He began his journey at Gulu FM, where he was a regular guest on youth-focused programs. He later moved to Radio Maria Uganda as a presenter and Luo news anchor before being mentored by Fr. Charles Onen, the current Member of Parliament for Pece-Laroo Division in Gulu City.
His career trajectory soared further when he joined Favour FM, a Christian radio station in Gulu, where he became a household name as a news anchor and political talk show host. Notably, he moderated the 2021 general election debate in Northern Uganda, he works with Mega FM, one of the most influential stations in the region, and runs his own fast-growing online channel, Luo Television, which delivers political content and updates across Northern Uganda.
Wilfred's victory signals a new era for the NRM Youth League in Amuru District, one rooted in media-savvy leadership, grassroots mobilisation, and unwavering loyalty to the ruling party.
