Norbert Mao emphasized the significance of the 12th Parliament in Uganda's history, stating that the ongoing retreat aims to equip incoming members with a sense of responsibility, as they're key to bridging gaps.

Speaking to Journalists on Tuesday, Mao expressed excitement to meeting the newly elected MPs during the retreat, noting that many mistakenly believe the retreat focuses on the speakership.

Instead, Mao stressed that beyond electing a speaker, members must recognize themselves as the national assembly, representing Ugandans. He stated that he expects the next speaker to ensure members have a voice and aren't just present.

Mao told journalists that if members of the 12th Parliament understood their importance, they'd take their roles more seriously.

He likened them to the crusted crane, saying if it knew its value, it wouldn't live in wetlands but in the State House, and be revered in parliament and the Supreme Court.

Mao emphasized the retreat aims to spark a new consciousness among MPs, highlighting their crucial role in shaping Uganda's future, likening it to midwifery.

Meanwhile, the National Resistance Movement (NRM) leaders' retreat has commenced at the National Leadership Institute (NALI) in Kyankwanzi, with themes of unity, patriotism, and renewed determination.

The week-long retreat will focus on aligning NRM leadership towards protecting gains and achieving a higher middle-income status society. H.E President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni will officially open the retreat this afternoon.
