Three passengers were on Sunday March 9, 2025 injured as a bus belonging to HMK bus company overturned in Agago District.
The Isuzu coach registration number UAU 079Q en route to Patongo town council from Kalongo town council overturned in Akedo South, Agago District.
The bus, operated by HMK Company, was being driven by a man identified only as Kizza. According to police reports, the accident happened due to a sudden failure in the vehicle’s lighting system.
Eyewitnesses said the driver struggled to control the bus when its headlights malfunctioned. With limited visibility, the vehicle veered off the road before overturning, causing panic among passengers.
Passengers onboard were thrown into confusion as the bus lost control. Those seated near the windows suffered the most impact as the vehicle hit the ground, leaving three seriously injured.
Local residents rushed to the scene to assist victims. Some used their phones as flashlights to check on survivors while others called for emergency medical assistance from nearby health facilities.
Police officers from Agago District arrived shortly after to assess the situation. They helped evacuate injured passengers and coordinated efforts to tow the bus away from the accident scene.
The injured were taken to a nearby hospital for treatment. Medical personnel confirmed that while they sustained serious injuries, their conditions were stable, and they were responding well to treatment.
Authorities have launched an investigation into the accident. Preliminary findings suggest that poor vehicle maintenance could have contributed to the sudden lighting failure, leading to the unfortunate crash.
The police have urged bus operators to conduct regular mechanical inspections. They emphasized the importance of ensuring all vehicles, especially public transport, meet safety standards to prevent similar incidents.
Despite the injuries, no fatalities were reported. However, passengers and residents expressed concerns over road safety and called for stricter enforcement of transport regulations to protect travelers.
