The Uganda National Roads Authority (UNRA) has confirmed the rehabilitation of Karuma bridge has almost reached its final stage as it awaits the formworks installation.

According to UNRA’s Post on the Authority’s official X account the major infrastructure project is now moving swiftly towards completion, promising a revitalised transport link that is essential for both local and regional traffic.

According to Eng Lawrence Pario, head of bridges and structures at UNRA, formwork installation is nearly 80% complete, marking a key milestone.

The ongoing project is set to significantly enhance the durability and resilience of the bridge, which plays a crucial role in linking northern Uganda with the rest of the country.

Once reopened, the Karuma Bridge will support safer and more efficient movement for both travelers and freight transporters, further fostering connectivity and economic growth across the region

In May, the government closed the bridge to heavy vehicles, including buses, trucks and trailers, as engineers took up repairs. This was to last three months.

However, it was later determined that a nearly total overhaul of the bridge was necessary to restore it. Besides the major supporting structures that were fixed, the entire surface was also removed and refurbished.

While it was closed, traffic was diverted to Murchison Falls National Park.

UNRA’s commitment to timely and safe delivery underscores the authority's dedication to Uganda's infrastructure development.

Transporters and local residents alike can look forward to the bridge’s reopening, which is expected to ease travel during the festive season.

Meanwhile the bridge will likely open to the public on December 20th 2024 following the reconstruction works.
