LR Media Initiative Ltd in collaboration with NeurXtend Foundation has demonstrated continued commitment to social responsibility by donating essential items to families affected by Nodding Syndrome stigma.

The donation exercise, which also featured guidance and counselling from health experts, brought together over 100 families and created a vibrant, meaningful atmosphere.

With support from Kilak South MP Hon. Gilbert Olanya, Gulu City Woman MP Hon. Betty Aol Ocan, Hon. Christine Lanyero alias “Mego Larem”, and Santa Foundation, each beneficiary received clothes, sugar, maize flour, washing soap, and sanitary pads for affected girls.

Addressing beneficiaries, Mrs. Lucy Lamunu, Director of LR Media Initiative Ltd, said the families are not forgotten and that together they can continue restoring hope and dignity.

She said: “As LR Media Initiative, we remain committed to telling stories that inspire action, advocating for vulnerable communities, and connecting those in need with those who can help.”

Mrs. Lamunu appealed to more well-wishers, organizations, and government stakeholders to continue supporting children affected by Nodding Syndrome and their caregivers.

“We therefore appeal to more well-wishers, organizations, and government stakeholders to continue supporting children affected by Nodding Syndrome and their caregivers so that together we can build a future filled with hope, dignity, and opportunity,” she said.

“To the children and caregivers here today, please know that you are not alone. We see you, we value you, and we will continue standing with you,” she added.

She extended appreciation to NeurXtend Foundation for continued nutrition support, especially to Mr. Mark Stecker for his compassion, and to the NeurXtend Foundation team: President Mr. Okello Ejedio, Hon. Dr. Gilbert Olanya, Rackara Moses, and all other members.

Beneficiaries expressed heartfelt appreciation to the two organizations, describing the support as relief and impactful.

Grace Layat, mother of four children affected by Nodding Syndrome, said stress has caused her to lose her sight.

She stated that stigma forced all four children out of school and left her feeling hopeless.

“At times I wish for death so I can rest from the stress and challenges I encounter daily while taking care of my four affected children,” she said.

Grace thanked LR Media Initiative Ltd and NeurXtend Foundation for responding to her cry for help. She said since the organizations started supporting the children with medication and food, their lives have changed significantly.

She appealed for clothes and iron-sheet houses, fearing the children might burn their grass-thatched houses whenever she leaves for garden work.

Akumu Margaret Obuna, another mother whose child is battling the condition, said she developed a stroke after suffering stigma and hatred from her home and community.

Akumu, formerly a local councillor, said she quit her post due to humiliation and embarrassment.

She appealed for financial support, saying most caregivers cannot educate unaffected children because all their time is spent caring for the sick.

Okello Freddie, the area LC3 Chairperson, said the children and their parents go through difficult times.

“Many of these children have lost their lives, and others have grown up still struggling with the stigma,” he said.

He raised an alarm to government: “I continue to raise an alarm, especially to government, to say that Nodding Syndrome is still here.”

He appreciated NeurXtend Foundation for supporting the children, noting reports of great improvement in their lives since food support began.
