Three people died and four others were injured on Saturday night after a Toyota Hiace collided with a crossing elephant along Arua Road inside Murchison Falls National Park.
The crash happened at about 8:00 p.m. on 24th May 2026, according to a statement from Traffic Police. The vehicle, registration number UA 20121AA, was carrying seven Uganda Revenue Authority officials who were traveling from Arua City back to Kampala after official duty.
Police said the driver knocked the elephant as it crossed the road and lost control of the vehicle. Three occupants died on the spot, while four others, including the driver, sustained injuries.
Officers responded promptly and rushed the injured to Kiryandongo Hospital for initial treatment. They were later transferred to Kampala for further medical care.
The bodies of the deceased were taken to Anaka Hospital mortuary pending postmortem examinations.
Traffic Police spokesperson SP Kananura Michael urged motorists to be cautious when driving through national parks and wildlife-protected areas, especially at night.
“Motorists are strongly urged to exercise extreme caution while driving through national parks and wildlife-protected areas, especially during night hours, and to strictly observe speed limits to avoid such incidents,” he said.
Wildlife collisions are a known hazard on roads cutting through Murchison Falls National Park, where animals frequently cross between dusk and dawn.
