Lyec Uganda Literacy Association (LULA Uganda) on Tuesday, April 22, 2025 has donated learning materials worth shs 6.5 million to St Jude's Primary school in Layibi-bardge division as part of their ongoing intervention to empower underserved children through literacy, innovation and community driven learning.
LULA Uganda is an organisation which started in 2022 to promote education innovation and support literacy growth of the kids in Northern Uganda.
The donation included 1500 reading books, a laptop computer, and a projector aimed at improving the learning skills of over 510 pupils at the school.
Mr Isaac Watum, the organisation team leader emphasized the organisation's commitment to sharing resources and addressing the needs of the children.
He revealed that the donation is part of their ongoing intervention to improve learning in Northern Uganda.
Mr Isaac Watum added that when he and team visited the school for the first time in 2022, he saw how the school was diverse with different types of kids, abilities and learning individual needs that needed to be made and they committed to support the school by giving them books every year.
"The idea came when I went to do a research with Caritas in child protection in 2017 by then I was at the university, I discovered that one of the biggest problems that the kids were facing in the field was illiteracy and when I looked at the chart and the table of kids who were abused and exploited, those who could not read and write had the higher numbers.''
He also stated that they have trained the school teachers on innovative education, fun learning and how to bring games into the classroom and make learning more engaging so that the kids attention is not drawn to other things.
He further explained that they have witnessed a very great improvement on the pupils and they can now read on their own.
"We have seen the improvement in the literacy, kids learn to read and today I was very surprised because last time when we came a kid in primary four (4) could not read any of our books, now they read our books and the books we write are very culturally relevant to them. We write books that speak to their life about local stories."
Nyeko Francis, the headteacher of St Jude Primary School, expressed gratitude for the continued support from LULA Uganda, highlighting the positive impact the materials have had on the learners.
The school, which currently has over 510 pupils with 76 out of them are children with disabilities and have faced challenges in accessing quality learning materials.
The intervention by LULA Uganda is expected to enhance the learning experience and provide a more conducive environment for the pupils to excel in Northern Uganda and Uganda at large.
