Gulu district registered 1917 cases of Gender Based Violence in six months

The Gulu district probation office has registered a total of 1,917 cases of Gender Based Violence in the past six months. The statistics  probation anticipates that it may increase toward the end of the year compared to a total of 2,658 cases entered in 2022.

Jessica Anena, the Gulu District Senior probation officer revealed that cases of denial of resources, opportunities and services were highest with a total 985 cases entered, followed by 461 cases of physiological abuse, a total of 255 cases of physical assault were also registered, 76 defilement cases were entered.

Other abuses include 14 cases of child marriage, 54 rape cases and 52 cases of sexual assault.

The leading sub-county in Gulu district with high cases of GBV include Paicho with 231 cases, followed by Owalo sub-county with 211 cases, Patiko came third with 210 cases.

Meanwhile Bungatira sub county recorded 207 GBV cases, Palaro, 206, Awach, 202, Owoo 192, and Paibona with 184 cases.

The promotion department attributed the high cases of GBV in Gulu to alcoholism, poverty, and negative cultural norms among other factors.

The statistics were revealed last week during the launch of 16 days of activism against GBV for Gulu district which was held at Owalo sub-county.

The Owalo sub-county authorities have attributed the increasing cases of GBV among its populace to the presence of Balalo herdsmen, presence of prison farms, UPDF training wing and Lugore army Barrack.

Okoya Owen Chris, the Owalo sub-county LCIII Chairperson in October during the interview with  this publication  revealed that  infiltration of strangers who are prone to luring local women and young girls with money in exchange of sex if fueling GBV.

2023 16 days of activism against GBV ended on Sunday 10 th December it was celebrated under the theme “UNITE! invest to prevent violence against women and girls ".

The campaign calls on citizens to show how much they care about ending violence against women and girls by sharing the actions they are taking to create a world free from violence towards women.

This year's campaign also calls on governments worldwide to share how they are investing in gender-based violence prevention.
