A joint intelligence-led operation by UPDF, Uganda Police Force and ISO has netted eight suspected members of an armed criminal gang and recovered two sub-machine guns with 30 rounds of ammunition in West Acholi.
The 3-week operation targeted Gulu City, Nwoya, Omoro and Gulu districts following a rise in violent crimes that threatened peace and livelihoods, according to 4th Infantry Division Public Information Officer Capt. David K. Kamya.
“The operation was a response to escalating armed criminal activities that have adversely affected security and local communities,” Capt. Kamya said. He credited intelligence and community tip-offs for the success.
Those arrested are Ronald Bob Komakech, Solomon Ojok, Yassin Okot, Vincent Opiru, Raymond Komakech, Stephen Ayella, Francis Okello Owiro and one other suspect, all residents of Nwoya District.
Security officials say they are being investigated over murder, attempted murder, aggravated robbery, theft of firearms from security personnel, unlawful possession of military/police equipment, and wildlife crimes.
One suspect, Daniel Komakech, died on 19 June 2026 after a confrontation during arrest. Capt. Kamya said Daniel resisted and tried to disarm officers on the night of 18–19 June, forcing security to use “reasonable force”. He was rushed to 4 Infantry Division Military Hospital but died that morning.
