Renowned South Sudanese musician, composer and performer Lazarus Jay, whose music reflected the country’s long struggle for peace and independence, has died at the age of 40.

Known for his hit song “Luluwe,” Lazarus Jay, whose real name was Lazarus Okeny Joseph Otto, reportedly died at the Elegu border while travelling to Gulu, Uganda.

His death was disclosed by Ugandan Criminal Investigations Department (CID) officials on Saturday.

Lazarus was a former member of the J2Guys music group. He was born on May 30, 1986, in Omeo Village, Magwi County. In 2004, he co-founded J2Guys alongside fellow musician Jonny Bee.

The group gained popularity through songs including “Luluwe,” “Take You Home” and “Mama Mary Ayen,” which helped establish its place in South Sudan’s music industry.

Lazarus was also among the musicians who contributed to the composition of South Sudan’s national anthem, further cementing his contribution to the country’s cultural and musical heritage.

His music captured the cries of innocent people in their distant homeland and reflected South Sudan’s eventual attainment of peace after years of armed struggle.

One of the group’s defining songs, it resonated with audiences during a significant period in the country’s history.

According to reports, the music legend suffered from liver failure caused by liver cirrhosis associated with hepatitis. A medical report reportedly indicated that he had been vomiting blood following complications from the condition.
