Singer Liama has opened up about why she stepped away from music in 2007, saying she nearly quit the industry for good after an alleged assault in a recording studio.
Speaking during an interview, Liama said she first stopped music the same year she started Senior One. She explained that she left after a music producer nearly raped her.
“I almost got raped in the studio by a music producer in 2007,” she said. “The only person who rescued me at that time was Abel Mubarak Worldwide. He doesn’t even know that he rescued me.”
Liama said she was then the entertainment prefect at her school and would bring fellow students to the studio to record. In exchange, she negotiated to record her own songs without paying. She said the experience changed her view of the industry.
“If all producers want to first use you, then I don’t want to do music,” she said. “When it almost happened, I was a virgin. Feeling those things wasn’t easy. I told myself I don’t want to be a musician if that’s how female artists are treated.”
She said she returned to music in 2010, after saving her own money. Liama warned other female artists to be careful with producers who seek to exploit them before delivering on their work.
“Female artists, be very careful,” she said.
