Police in Gulu City are investigating the death of a 27-year-old man who was beaten by a mob in Bardege-Layibi Division after he was allegedly caught stealing turkeys.

The deceased, Arop Jafari, a peasant from Anyomotwon Village, Abuga Sub-county in Omoro District, died on April 23, according to police.

Gulu West Police registered the case as murder by mob action under CRB 102/2026.

Police says the incident was reported by the area LC1 Chairperson Boniface Oryem, 46, on April 24 at 1:30pm. He told police that Jafari was caught at around 8:00am on April 23 after he allegedly climbed the fence of a resident identified as Ocen in Alokolum Centre, Gweno Twom B Cell.

A security guard raised an alarm and residents surrounded the area. Jafari tried to flee but was chased, caught, and beaten by the mob, Oryem said.

The mob later took Jafari to the LC1’s office. Oryem called police, but relatives picked up Jafari and took him home, where he later died. The death was reported to police the following day.

A police team led by the Gulu West Deputy CID Officer visited the scene. Officers recorded statements from the reporter and arranged for a postmortem at the hospital using Police Form 48C.

Investigations are ongoing. No arrests have been made.
