A young Kawaala boy captured in a viral video pleading with his mother and pulling her back from the road side as she attempts to end her life has sparked reactions online.
In the clip, widely shared on social media, the boy is seen trying to stop his mother from stepping into highway traffic. He can be heard saying, "Mummy, let's not go," while the mother insists, "Let's go."
The boy however made a touching statement, asking people to stop the speeding cars not to knock his mother.
The video has triggered mixed reactions, with some users calling the boy a hero, while others criticize the country’s leaders.
The family says their home was demolished by government officials after they had lived there for years in Kawaala, Kampala.
Authorities allege the house lacked approved building plans and was on land earmarked for a project. However, residents claim they received no notice and were left homeless.
The boy’s mother, the family’s caregiver, reportedly attempted to take her own life before her son intervened. The incident has raised questions about how the Ugandan government treats vulnerable families during demolitions.
The National Environment Management Authority (NEMA) launched its operations to evict encroachers from the Lubigi Wetland in Kawaala, Lubaga Division, Kampala, where the family’s home was located.
