The Gulu Marathon has tripled the reasons to get involved in its 3rd edition, set for 5 December 2026 in Gulu City under the theme, Celebrating Culture and Heritage.

The run was launched at Gulu City Inn Hotel on Saturday, 23 May 2026, reinforcing its status as a leading sporting event in Northern Uganda.

The launch was graced by the newly elected Gulu City Mayor, His Worship Acire Julius Labeja, as Chief Guest. He pledged full support ahead of this year’s marathon.

Organizers said they are targeting more than 3,000 participants. The annual event continues to position Northern Uganda as a growing tourism and cultural destination.

National Chairperson of the Gulu City Marathon, Mr. Francis Gimara, said the event was established to change perceptions about Gulu District and the wider Acholi Sub-region. Once associated with conflict, the region is now increasingly recognized for its culture, tourism, and economic potential.

He noted that this year’s run will take place at the usual venue, Kaunda Grounds, and will feature the standard categories: 42km, 21km, and 5km races.

Gimara said the event has significantly boosted the local economy, especially the hospitality sector.

He added that the marathon also serves as a community support initiative, with part of the proceeds channeled into social projects.
