President Yoweri Museveni has strongly condemned former Uganda President  (dictator) Idi Amin, describing him as a “tool of the devil” who forcefully imposed himself on Ugandans, as the country marked the 40th commemoration of Janani Luwum Day.

The national public holiday was observed on February 16, 2026, in honour of the late Anglican Archbishop who was brutally murdered in 1977 for openly opposing state violence and human rights abuses during Amin’s regime.

Speaking to a large gathering in Kitgum today , Museveni said the commemoration was meant to expose and denounce the evils that once plagued the country, using Archbishop Luwum’s martyrdom as a symbol of courage, faith, and resistance against tyranny.

“We are here to shame the devil who was operating in people like Idi Amin. He made many mistakes; first, he imposed himself on us as a leader,” Museveni said.

The President praised Archbishop Luwum’s unwavering stand against brutality, noting that his legacy continues to guide Uganda’s journey toward peace, stability, and moral leadership. Museveni urged Christians to remain united and committed to the values of truth, justice, and reconciliation, which Luwum stood for until his death.
