NIRA stops IDs distribution and registration ahead of 2026 polls at parish level

National Identification and Registration Authority, (NIRA) has stopped the distribution of National IDs at Parish level across the country.

Speaking to the media on Monday, 12th January, 2026, Clare Ollama, the NIRA Registrar revealed that NIRA closed their Parish offices on Saturday, 10th January, 2026 taking the services to Sub Counties.

She also says the issuance of IDs at Sub County level will temporarily be halted effective Wednesday, 14th January, 15th and 16th January 2026 to allow for smooth elections.

Meanwhile, NIRA offices will also remain closed on 14th, 15th and 16th, 22nd and 27th January 2026 and 4th February, 2026. This applies to Sub County operations as well.

The resumption of Parish level issuance of IDs shall be communicated after conclusion of elections, however, sub county services will continue on the other normal working days.
