Minister of Works and Transport Gen Katumba Wamala has confirmed that Karuma Bridge will face another second phase of shutdown to allow further repair works on the facility. This comes less than two months after it was partially reopened.

The bridge, which underwent extensive repairs costing the government Shs11 billion, was initially closed on September 23, 2024. It was partially reopened on December 20, 2024, allowing only light vehicles and buses to cross, while heavy trucks remained restricted.

Speaking before the Parliament Committee on the Budget, Gen. Katumba disclosed that the technical team is still assessing the situation. Authorities are yet to decide whether repairs can proceed while maintaining limited access or if a complete closure will be necessary.

The potential shutdown raises concerns over transport and trade disruptions, especially for businesses and communities reliant on the route. As the evaluation continues, stakeholders await a final decision on the bridge’s operational status.
