UPDF Special Forces Commandos on Tuesday launched an attack on Lord's Resistance Army (LRA) bases in Central African Republic (CAR) in search of the Joseph Kony.

According to reports, the attack was coordinated with South Sudan and CAR armed forces.

Officials say the attack was conducted on LRA’s three camps located east of Sam Ouandja.

Born in early 1961 into an Acholi peasant family in Odek sub-county, present-day Omoro district, Kony and his LRA group have been accused of committing atrocities which include killing, abducting and displacing communities in Northern Uganda. Kony was indicted in 2005 by the International Criminal Court (ICC) for 12 counts of crimes against humanity and 21 counts of war crimes.

It's said that the UPDF commandos used helicopters in the airborne attacks before conducting a ground assault.

This is the first time in several years that UPDF is conducting such a commando operation against LRA.

It is not very clear whether Kony was in the attacked bases.

Officials said they were assessing the situation to determine the extent of damage and number of casualties in the attack.

The assault comes after the International Criminal Court (ICC) closed its investigation into alleged crimes against humanity and war crimes committed by the rebel Lord’s Resistance Army (LRA) in Northern Uganda.
