The Uganda People’s Defence Forces (UPDF) 4th Division Commander, Brig Bonny Bamwiseki, has ordered security in Gulu City to conduct an immediate vetting and arrest of all foreign nationals and non-residents operating in the city.
"All these foreigners must have identities, we must know who they are, those they came with and with whose permission. Each of them must show their passport. We have immigration in Gulu and they must help you to do this so that we clean our city,” UPDF 4th Division Commander, Brig Bonny Bamwiseki
While speaking to the media in Gulu on Wednesday, Brig Bamwiseki said the army’s intelligence wing had credible information that the boda boda robberies and gun crimes in the city were being perpetrated by non-nationals whose identities were unknown
Brig. Bonny said all security organs from the village up to the city level should register newcomers in their areas to avoid wrong elements who may want to disrupt the peace and security and also prevent the possibility of the out break of ebola in the city.
He explained that as part of safety and security measures they have restricted entrance into the country through Southern Sudan and Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) before and put some health measure to be followed before entering.
The 4th Division Commander further added that they have also suspended their mortuary service to civilians until further notice as another precautionary measure to keep their officers from contracting ebola and COVID-19.
He also directed all security organs to cooperate with the division authorities and local leaders to work together and conduct regular night operations.
The development is major setback to majority of the members of the the public in Northern Uganda who relies on the Gulu 4th Division Military Baracks mortuary to preserves their dead bodies since they are consider it as the only strong mortuary in the region.
