Karuma and Ayago bridges along the Kampala- Gulu highway have officially been reopened for all the traffic after temporary closure of the two key infrastructure points last month.
The bridges were closed for repairs, and the reopening followed the successful installation and curing of expansion joints.
The closure, which took effect in mid-March, had raised alarm among commuters and traders who rely heavily on the Kampala–Gulu route, particularly during the busy Easter season.
According to the Ministry of Works and Transport the expansion joints are critical components that allow the bridge structure to expand and contract with temperature changes and traffic loads, thereby maintaining its structural integrity and extending its lifespan.
