A police officer was shot dead and four civilians wounded on Friday night when a fellow officer opened fire during a botched arrest in Nebbi Municipality.
PC Olupot Joseph died at Nebbi General Hospital after being shot by PC Okello Sam during an operation to arrest Ocircan Robert, 32, in Kasuku Cell on June 6, 2026.
The injured are Okecha Charles, 44; Pimer Irene, 32; Oroch Charles, 52; and two-year-old Epifania Joy. All are receiving treatment at Nebbi General Hospital.
West Nile Police Spokesperson SSP Josephine Angucia said officers had gone to arrest Ocircan after his girlfriend, Atuhaire Praise, 25, reported a domestic dispute at Nebbi Central Police Station.
Angucia said community members pelted officers with stones at 6:10 pm, prompting PC Okello to fire into the crowd. He hit his colleague and four bystanders.
PC Okello, Badge No. 78710, is detained at Nebbi CPS. Police have opened case G.E.F 15/2026 and recovered the firearm for forensic analysis.
Authorities have urged calm and asked residents to cooperate with investigators.
