Ayot Harriet, a 24 year old Graceland Girls' Secondary School student, is the new Laber Acholi (Miss Acholi) 2024 after the emerging winner of the beauty contest over the weekend.
Harriet, born of Omoro was crowned at an event held at Da Covenant Bar and Grill in Gulu City on Saturday, September 21, 2024.
A member belonging to the Guna Clan from Omoro District, not only claimed the title but also walked away with a cash prize of 1 million shillings.
Akello Brenda from Kitgum District secured first runner up position and Nimaro Apiyo Concy from Amuru District emerged second runner while Akello Fiona from Pader District and Isabella Prischa Abalo from Nwoya District came in fourth and fifth place.
Speaking to luotunes.com, Harriet says she is going to fight very hard to change the life of the young girls who are out of school by skilling them with livelihood programme to help them start their own business than going to do sex work in search of money to survive or to support their families.
She added that she will also ensure that young girls are educated on how Acholi tradition used to be.
''I will fight so hard to change the life of the young girls. Skilling them with knowledge on how to generate their own income rather than running after men looking for money. Educating them about the Acholi tradition on how they used to live their lives''. She said.
