At least two children have been killed and two others wounded after an abandoned bomb detonated in Kaabong district on Saturday 13th, April, 2024.
The deceased are; Ayollo Lokutai aged 13 and Lokoel Komol, 12, while Meri Lomonyang aged 9, and Meri Lokiditoi were left with minor injuries. The four were all pupils of Kakamar primary school.
It was reported that on Saturday afternoon, the four boys left home to go and cut trees to fence the goat's kraal before they landed on the abandoned bomb in Nakituriket village in Kakamar sub-county.
Ayollo reportedly picked up the bomb and started playing with it while hitting the bomb's base under the close watch of Komol. Lomonyang and Lokiditoi were at a distance cutting the tree when the device exploded, killing Lokutai and Komol on the spot.
Meri Jino, LC V chairperson of the Kaabong district, told reporters that the unfortunate incident took them by surprise. He added that the security forces were notified and a team of police detectives visited the scene for further management. It remains unclear who abandoned the bomb in the village.
