Barbed wires on high market as president’s 3-weeks ultimatum close to ends

UPDF Intelligence report has established that hardware dealers and roofing in both Gulu and Kampala are making a number of sales of their barbed wire since the president issued executive order number 3 of 2023 on Balalo herdsmen.

In his executive order, the president directed all the cattle farmers to fence their land to deter animals from destroying crops.

Major Telesphor Turyamanya, the fourth division infantry Army spokesperson yesterday revealed that their intelligence teams have established that roofing and the majority of hardware within Gulu and Kampala is making sale of their thorny wire.

Barbed wire is one of the common wires preferred by the cattle farmer for fencing their grazing land to confine both small-sized animals such as goat sheep and large-sized cattle from accessing the neighborhood.

On 3rd November this year, President Museveni meeting communities and Acholi leaders in Okidi, Atiak sub county Gulu district over Balalo issues, ordered indiscipline Balalo herdsmen in Northern Uganda who did not meet the requirement to vacate the Region within 3-week time.

In his order the president says the herdsmen have to enclose their land with chain-link, the one he says will completely deter the animals from destroying neighbors crops but not barbed wire.

The cattle keepers who were not having the fence when the ultimatum was issued are found to be using the 3-week time to erect their fences.

Grace Freedom Kwiyucwiny, Minister of state for northern Uganda yesterday told journalists that her office is linking up with various ministries to ensure that the executive order is implemented harmoniously.

Adding that the securities are ready and they are on standby to execute the duty once the dateline which is on 24 November 2023 elapses.

UPDF 4th Division spokesperson says they are going to deploy helicopters, foot soldiers and vehicles to escort the errant Balalo herdsman out of the region following the provided routes.

Odong Stephen Latek, RDC of Amuru district says Amuru has 86 non-compliance Balalo with about 400 heads of cattle but none of them have voluntarily left the district.
