Police in Arua District are holding a 22-year-old woman for allegedly dumping her newly born baby boy into a pit latrine.
The West Nile Region Police Spokesperson Josephine Angucia has identified the suspect as Drateru Janet, a resident of Yiwu-East village, Tilevu Parish, Vurra Sub County in Arua district.
Angucia says that on Monday 09th January 2023 at around 10pm, Drateru gave birth to a baby boy by induction, she cut the umbilical cord and later dumped it into the neighbor’s pit latrine.
The baby was however found by a resident crying in the neighbor’s pit latrine who reported the matter to police on Tuesday.
Angucia said that police rushed to the scene and rescued the baby, and it was rushed to Arua Regional Referral Hospital for treatment
The suspect was arrested and detained at Vurra police station, the case of child abuse was registered also registered at the same police station.
According to the investigations, it was found that the suspect’s husband denied being responsible for fathering the baby.
Angucia disclosed that the suspect feared losing her marriage in case it’s confirmed that the baby was for a different man, hence ridiculous.
”She accordingly induced the baby using medicine which resulted into a premature birth, however, the baby is still alive receiving treatment at Arua Regional Referral Hospital,” Angucia said.
