Gulu City Falcons Rugby Club Advance To Semi Finals For Uganda Rugby Championship Playoffs

It has been a nice weekend for rugby lovers as Gulu City Falcons Rugby Club and Njeru Hurricanes engaged in a competitive rugby game at Markerere Rugby Ground.

With the championship being a straight knockout tournament, there had to be a winner at the end of the day and the City Falcons proved a better side. Gulu City Falcons beat Njeru Hurricanes 31-10 to advance to semi finals of the Uganda Rugby Union Championship.

The semifinal draws for the rugby championship playoffs (rugby premier league qualifiers) were released on Monday 29th May, 2023 at 11 am.

The clashes are set to see four formidable sides vying for a spot in the final and the chance to attain promotion to the Nile Special Rugby Premiership League in the season 2024..

The first semifinal will witness a clash between Gulu City Falcons and Eagles. Both teams showcased their strength and prowess in the quarterfinals played on the 27th at the Makerere grounds.

Falcons who were crowned champions of Northern Region 15s league soared above Njeru Hurricanes, securing a 31-10 victory while Eagles soared to new heights, defeating Lira Big Boys with an impressive 96-6 victory.

Speaking to Oketayot Robert who double as the club treasurer and a player, he said hiring a new coach from Kampala helped them seriously in shaping to win the first playoffs (quarter finals).

According to Oketayot Robert, with all the training they are having, he believes that they are going to make it to the Nile Special Rugby Premiership League.

He said they always face a lot of challenges when transporting the team to Central for games because the team still has no clear source of fundings.

"We as Gulu City Falcons at the moment the direct source of funding right now is not yet there. Most of the money we comes from well-wishers who loves the sport most of the time when we go to them and cry out for help of which they always support us with what they can." - He said.

He, however, expressed that through the sport, they have changed many lives because they don't only educate sports only but they also educate their players about social life and how to live in the community.
