A helicopter belonging to Uganda People's Defence Forces (UPDF) has on Friday crashed while on mission in Somalia to support AMISOM troops injuring four soldiers.
The reports indicates that the aircraft crashed soon after take-off in Balidogle in the Lower Shabelle region of Somalia on Friday.
All the crew aboard the helicopter was rescued and is in stable condition according to the AMISOM spokesperson’s office.
Amisom said the aircraft belonged to the AU mission’s Aviation Unit from the UPDF.
According to AMISOM, investigations into the crash of the UPDF chopper have commenced but preliminary findings indicate that it was due to mechanical failure.
The UPDF deployed choppers in Somalia in July last year to help in the fight against Alshabab militants.
However, according to the deputy UPDF spokesperson, Lt Col Deo Akiiki, the crash will not affect the army’s offensives against the Al Shabaab militants in Somalia.
