Several passengers have been injured following an accident involving a Nile Star Bus Company coach travelling from Yumbe to Kampala, raising fresh concerns about the company's road safety record.
The accident occurred on Monday night at Enzeva along the Arua-Nebbi Road after the bus reportedly lost control while attempting to avoid a trailer.
According to preliminary reports, several passengers sustained injuries, prompting an emergency response. Ambulances were seen at the scene, ferrying the injured to nearby hospitals for medical attention.
The latest incident comes months after the government suspended Nile Star Bus Company from operating for 30 days earlier this year over a series of road crashes that left several people dead and others injured.
On May 6, State Minister for Works and Transport, Mr Fred Byamukama, announced the suspension, citing the company's alarming road safety record.
The suspension followed a fatal crash along the Arua-Karuma Highway in which seven people were killed and 13 others injured after a Nile Star bus collided with a truck in Purongo Town Council, Nwoya District.
The minister further disclosed that Nile Star buses had reportedly been involved in 11 crashes during the period under review.
Following the 30-day suspension, Nile Star Bus Company resumed operations, with the latest accident raising questions about whether sufficient measures have been put in place to prevent further crashes.
The circumstances surrounding Monday night's accident remain unclear, including the exact number of passengers injured and the severity of their injuries.
The latest crash has renewed calls for stricter enforcement of road safety regulations and greater accountability among public transport operators, particularly those with a history of serious accidents.
Authorities are expected to establish the circumstances surrounding the incident as concerns mount over the safety of passengers travelling on the country's highways.
