A video circulating online has sparked debate in Uganda after a family was reportedly left to bury their deceased loved one without help from members of their community in rain in Central Uganda.
In the footage, villagers are heard accusing the family of repeatedly failing to attend funerals, contribute to community fundraising efforts or support neighbours during times of bereavement.
According to accounts accompanying the video, the villagers said they had chosen not to offer assistance because the family had previously failed to extend the same support to others in the community.
The circumstances surrounding the video, including its exact location and the claims made about the family, have not been independently verified.
The incident has nevertheless reignited discussion about the longstanding practice of reciprocal community support at funerals in Uganda, where neighbours, relatives and community groups may come together to provide food, money, labour and other forms of assistance to grieving families.
The episode has also prompted questions about whether such support should be viewed as a mutual obligation or extended regardless of past disagreements within a community.
