Police in Amolatar District are holding two suspects following an alleged incident in which an eight-year-old girl sustained severe burns after dry grass was reportedly tied to her hands and set on fire.
The suspects are Nickson Esongu, alias Onik, and Dilish Akullu, the child's mother. They were arrested on September 14, 2026, and are currently detained at Amolatar Central Police Station.
The incident reportedly occurred at Epyel Cell, Epyel Ward, Amolatar Town Council, after Esongu allegedly accused his stepdaughter of stealing 200 shillings.
Preliminary accounts indicate that Esongu obtained dry grass, tied it to the child's hands and set it alight. Akullu was reportedly present during the incident.
Following the incident, LC1 Chairperson Alfred Emong Adingi alerted police. Residents reportedly apprehended Akullu, while Esongu fled into a nearby swamp.
Police and residents conducted a search and later encountered Esongu as he attempted to return toward his home. Officers reportedly fired warning shots before arresting him.
The victim reportedly told authorities that she had experienced repeated physical abuse and starvation. She also alleged unequal treatment within the household.
Akullu reportedly claimed that Esongu intended to discipline the child over alleged thefts and that she did not know he planned to burn her. Esongu reportedly admitted to the incident and said his intention was to deter the child from stealing.
The suspects are facing allegations of aggravated child torture and domestic abuse. Investigations remain ongoing.
An additional claim concerning the previous death of the child's biological father in Nambyeso, Kwania District, has not been independently verified.
