Veteran politician and Adjumani West MP Gen. Moses Ali has reportedly died at the age of 87 on Saturday, July 18, 2026 from Nakasero Hospital after days under Intensive care.
At the time of his reported death, the 87-year-old was serving as Member of Parliament for Adjumani West in the 12th Parliament and as Second Deputy Prime Minister and Deputy Leader of Government Business.
In May 2026, President Yoweri Museveni named new Deputy Prime Ministers, and Gen. Ali was dropped from the First Deputy PM docket but remained Second Deputy PM.
Popularly known as the "Lion of Adjumani," Gen. Ali served Uganda for more than five decades. Born April 5, 1939 in Atabo Parish, Pakele Division, Adjumani District, he began as a teacher before joining the Uganda Army in 1968. He rose to Brigadier under Idi Amin and later held dockets including Internal Affairs, Provincial Administration, and Finance.
After the fall of Amin in 1979, he went into exile in Sudan and in 1980 formed the Uganda National Rescue Front. He reconciled with the NRM government in 1986 and has served in Cabinet since the 1990s in ministries including Tourism, Youth and Sports, and Disaster Preparedness. He was first elected MP for East Moyo, now Adjumani West, in 2001 and retained the seat in 2026.
He holds an LLB from Makerere University, a Diploma in Legal Practice from Law Development Centre, and military training from Uganda, Israel and the UK.
He sat his PLE at Erepi Church of Uganda in 1957, Earned a certificate at Church of Uganda Junior S. S. in 1957. From 1964 to 1966, he went to Old Kampala S.S. for his general certificate in education.
He earned a certificate in Officer Cadet Training in Isreal. He also undertook a certificate in Paratrooper Instructors Training in Isreal in 1969, attained a certificate in Company Commanders Course in Israel in 1972. In 2007, he got a certificate in education in Law at the University of Wolverhampton.
