The Ministry of Education and Sports has with immediate effect suspended all school trips and educational excursions nationwide.

Minister of Education and Sports Dr. John Muyingo announced the decision on Friday morning, saying it is a precautionary measure to protect learners as the government reviews existing safety guidelines for school travel.

The suspension follows the tragic accident involving King David Junior School in Kapchorwa that claimed the lives of 20 pupils and one adult, with several others injured.

Dr. Muyingo said the Ministry is deeply saddened by recent accidents involving learners on school trips and extended condolences to bereaved families. He wished the injured a quick recovery.

According to the Minister, the safety of learners remains the government’s top priority and educational activities must not put children at risk. The suspension will stay in place until the Ministry completes a review of trip guidelines and puts in place stronger safety measures.

He directed the Permanent Secretary to immediately review current regulations and propose additional safeguards. Schools were also reminded to comply with existing rules, including using roadworthy and licensed vehicles, hiring qualified drivers with clean records, carrying out risk assessments, notifying parents, avoiding night travel, and ensuring proper teacher supervision.

The Ministry will work with Uganda Police, the Ministry of Works and Transport and other agencies to investigate recent incidents and develop measures to prevent similar tragedies.

School proprietors, headteachers, transport providers and parents have been urged to prioritize learner safety and adhere to all regulations.
