Police in Lira City have arrested four people after recovering a machine they say was used to produce counterfeit US dollars.
North Kyoga Police spokesperson Jimmy Patrick Okema said the machine was recovered from the bedroom of a woman identified as Sandra, sister of Nighty Wengo, in Ireda Shamda Cell, Lira City East Division.
Officers also recovered several vehicle logbooks and counterfeit US dollars amounting to USD 9 million, equivalent to about Shs33.7 billion at current exchange rates.
Okema said one suspect, Tonny Siwa, told police he took the machine to Wengo’s home because they had been doing business together.
The suspects are detained at Lira City Central Police Station as investigations continue.
