Democratic Party President Norbert Mao has called on Acholi MPs to collectively demand what he termed a “debt” owed to the region by President Yoweri Museveni.
Speaking during the burial of MP Gilbert Olanya’s mother in Amuru District over the weekend, Mao said the Acholi sub-region backed Museveni in past elections with an expectation that the government would address longstanding grievances.
“The reason Acholi voted for President Museveni is because he should pay our debt. All of us should go demanding our debt,” Mao tasked MPs.
He urged Acholi legislators to be bold when engaging the President on the matter. “Let’s go to demand our debt from President Museveni. Our debt needs braveness when going to demand,” he added.
Mao did not specify the nature of the “debt” but the remarks come amid ongoing regional demands for war reparations, infrastructure development, and compensation for cattle lost during past insurgencies.
The DP president, who also serves as Minister of Justice and Constitutional Affairs and Laroo-Pece Division MP, was addressing leaders and residents at the burial ceremony.
Minister Norbert Mao went ahead ans claimed he was responsible for Speaker Anita Among losing her position, though Among still holds the office as of June 2026.
