Lt Gen Charles Otema Awany is among 21 senior army generals expected to retire from active service in July 2026 as part of a wider UPDF personnel transition.

The Uganda People’s Defence Forces has begun the retirement process for senior officers whose careers have shaped the country’s military leadership for decades.

According to the official retirement list seen by Luo Tunes, the July 2026 cohort includes 2 Generals, 2 Lieutenant Generals, 5 Major Generals, and 16 Brigadier Generals. In total, thousands of personnel across all ranks are expected to retire under the broader exercise.

The retirements align with the UPDF retirement age policy: Generals and Lieutenant Generals retire at 65, Major Generals at 62, Brigadier Generals at 60, Colonels at 53, Lieutenant Colonels at 51, and Majors at 47.

Other notable officers on the list include Gen Edward Katumba Wamala, Lt Gen Charles Angina, Maj Gen Apolo Kasiita Gowa, Maj Gen Godfrey Katsigazi Tumusiime, Maj Gen Henry Ndarubweine Masiko, Maj Gen Leopold Kyanda, Brig Gen Edson Muhanguzi, Brig Gen Winston Byaruhanga, and Brig Gen Stephen Tumwesigye Kashure.

The UPDF says the process ensures continuity, professional growth, and leadership renewal within the armed forces.
