Police in Gulu City are hunting a group of assailants who killed a Gulu University laboratory technician in the early hours of May 22, 2026.

The victim, Nyeko Chris, 40, was attacked and killed in Forest Cell, Pece Prisons Ward, Pece-Laroo Division, according to a statement from Aswa West Police PRO ASP David Ongom Mudong.

Preliminary investigations show Nyeko was first seen at around 11:30 PM on May 21 at a shop near Jaka Gardens. He later moved to D-Plus Bar in the university area, a spot he often visited with friends.

At around 5:30 AM on May 22, Nyeko left the bar on foot heading home. Police say he was attacked about 10 minutes later near St. Peter’s Catholic Church, close to Gulu University.

Investigators believe Nyeko may have had a disagreement at the bar, prompting the attackers to follow him. Neighbors near Welbongo Market reported hearing shouting and an altercation before the killing. After the attack, the assailants searched his body and robbed some belongings, possibly including his phone.

Officers from Gulu Central Police Station responded to the scene and found Nyeko’s body lying in the road with a deep cut wound to the forehead, suspected to have been caused by a sharp object.

Homicide detectives and the police SOCO team documented the scene, collected forensic exhibits, and recorded statements from witnesses. The body was taken to Gulu Regional Referral Hospital mortuary for a postmortem.

“We urge people to prioritize personal security and safety to avoid life-threatening encounters, especially at night,” ASP Ongom said. He added that inquiries are ongoing and further updates will be shared.

Police say they are actively following up leads to apprehend the suspects.
