Mob Kills Suspected Motorcycle Thief in Gulu City

A 35-year-old man suspected of motorcycle theft was beaten to death by a mob in Gulu City on 3 May 2026.

According to Gulu West Division police, boda boda riders reported seeing an unconscious man lying along the road at Congoloya Trading Center, Kayogoga “B” Cell, Kayogoga Ward. 

OC Bardege Police Station, HCM Owona Samuel, and his team is said to have responded to the scene and rushed the man to Gulu Regional Referral Hospital. He was pronounced dead the following morning. 

The deceased was identified as Orech Joe, 35, a Lango by tribe and resident of Kanyagoga “A” Cell, Kayogoga Ward, Bardege-Layibi, Gulu City. His father, Agong Samuel, 64, reported the incident to police.

Police have opened a case of murder by mob, vide CRB 112/2026. The homicide team, together with OC Bardege, visited the scene, recorded witness statements, and drew a sketch plan. The body is at Gulu Referral Mortuary pending postmortem.

Investigators established that Orech was known to police as a notorious motorcycle thief in Gulu City. Some of his accomplices are already in prison, while others have been lynched, police said.

During a search of his residence with the area LC1 and relatives, officers recovered two suspected stolen motorcycles: UEY 252L and UEU 553Q, both Bajaj Boxer models.
